Funding Information

IWE Trust owns an extensive property portfolio, the funds generated from the rental income and other funding streams are used to further our charitable objects. In line with our governing document, we are able to provide funding to individuals and/or organisations that meet our funding criteria. Please note that the Board may, from time to time, authorise changes in the funding criteria, so always check this page for the latest updates.

How is the funding criteria set?

The Board authorise the funding criteria annually (in January). The criteria is decided after consideration of public need, governmental strategy, other charities in operation, social and environmental variables and economic viability, in addition to the interests of the charitable trust.

How is funding allocated?

Applications are open all year round, but submitted applications are only decided at three rounds per year, the dates of which vary. All applications received in each round are assessed by the Board and/or a delegated panel via scoring, which is based on feasibility, sustainability and impact.

The funding application process

Step 1 - Preparation

Read through all the guidance on this page and ensure you meet the funding criteria.

Step 2 - Apply

Submit the application form which can be accessed here.

Step 3 - Decision

Applications are considered at three rounds per year. If your application is not successful you will be contacted via email. If your application is successful, you will be allocated a case manager.

Step 5 - Get Funds

If you application is successful, you will be asked to sign a funding agreement, before receiving funds in your allocated bank account.

Step 6 - Compliance

Once your project is completed, you should complete the Project Report documentation and provide evidence of use of all funds (such as invoices, receipts etc) as part of your report.

Can I apply if I don't meet the criteria?

Unfortunately, if you do not meet the criteria outlined below, we cannot accept your application at this time. You may find help or assistance via another charity. If you are an organisation, you may find help here (external link) and if you are an individual seeking help, please contact Citizens Advice or Samaritans (external links).

Managing expectations

The Trust receives many more applications than it has funds to support. Only a small percentage of applications are successful. Owing to the high volume of applications, it is not always possible to give individual feedback to unsuccessful applicants.

Funding Criteria (2022)

In order to apply for funding, you need to meet all of the following eligibility conditions:

  • You must be a UK Registered Non-Profit Organisation
You can be a Registered Charity, Charitable Company, CIO,  CIC, Social Enterprise or otherwise. Your organisation may have more than one structure, i.e. be a registered charity and a company limited by guarantee. As long as it is a registered non-profit, it is eligible.
We do not accept applications from individuals and non-registered entities. We do not accept applications from internationally registered organisations. We do not accept applications from political parties.

  • You must have a UK Bank Account in the Organisation’s name
You must have a business or charity bank account that requires at-least two signatories and is registered to your organisation.

  • You must have been trading/operational for at-least six months prior to applying
We cannot accept applications from organisations registered less than six months ago.

  • You must have at-least three Trustees
We cannot accept applications from organisations with less than three trustees.

  • You must have an annual turnover of at-least 5000.00 GBP
We cannot accept applications from organisations that have less than 5000.00 GBP annual turnover (defined as 100% of charitable income plus proceeds from any trading income).
If you are expecting an annual turnover of more than 5000.00 GBP within the next 12 months, then you are still eligible to apply.

We only fund projects that specifically meet the following granting criteria:

  1. Categories
Applications must be for charitable purposes that fall into one of the six core categories below (applications for purposes outside these categories are only permitted at the direct invitation of a Trustee):
    1.1. Education
    1.2. Relief of poverty
    1.3. Social or Economic Disadvantage
    1.4. Orphan Support
    1.5. Health

  2. Grant Size
The minimum grant size is 100.00 GBP. Awards of more than 15,000.00 GBP are rare. A follow-up report, the scale of which is commensurate with the size of the grant, is expected within 1 month of completion of project, or within 12 months of payment – whichever is sooner. Details will be provided to successful applicants.
Grants are usually made as single payments. In some cases, larger grants are awarded in instalments, usually on the condition that satisfactory progress reports are submitted at regular intervals.
In some circumstances, the trust may decide to provide a loan instead of a grant, the details of which will be provided to successful applicants.

  3. Restrictions
There are no restrictions on the type of funding for which applicants may apply, and the Board will consider contributions towards core costs and capital works as well as specific projects.
The only exceptions which are imposed on the purpose for which a grant may be used:
    3.1. No expeditions
3.2. Personal expenses for specific individuals
